Geno Smith signs with the Los Angeles Chargers

Geno Smith must like the pressure. After spending the start of his career in the nation’s largest television market, he will now spend at least the next year in its second.

The Chargers announced the signing of Smith on Sunday to a one-year contract to backup Philip Rivers. Smith will compete with Cardale Jones to be the backup.

As Rivers enters his 15th year in the NFL, the Chargers are starting to look ahead for a new face of the franchise. Smith will get one year to audition for that role, similar to last season when he played for the Giants,

Smith and San Diego head coach Anthony Lynn became familiar with each other when both were members of the Jets’ organization. That familiarity seems to have bred interest in Smith.
