Esa Ahmad to join Sagaba Konate in testing NBA Draft waters

Esa Ahmad will submit papers to the NBA making himself eligible for the draft, but will not hire an agent according to a press release from West Virginia University. He joins Sagaba Konate in doing so.

“Just like Sags [Konate], Esa will go through the NBA Draft procedures in a systematic and professional manner by exploring the situation,” Bob Huggins said in the release. “Numerous college basketball players are testing the waters, gaining valuable feedback and leaving open their option to return to school.”

Ahmad was a highly touted recruit when he enrolled at WVU. He played in 21 games last season after being suspended for the first half of the season. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 30.6% from behind the three-point line.

He and Konate have until May 30th to decide if they will return to the Mountaineers or go pro. Jevon Carter put his name in for the draft following last season and chose to return for his senior season. By playing out his full four years of eligibility, Carter seems to have put himself in a better position for this year’s draft.

For Ahmad, this could be the case as well. It would be good sign for him if he receives an invite to the NBA Combine held May 16-20.
