The Pittsburgh Steelers released LB Mortty Ivy today from their practice squad. After a stellar preseason that saw Ivy among team leaders in tackles, he was cut and signed to the Steelers practice squad. The Steelers have one of the deepest corps of linebackers in the NFL, and when it came down to it, Ivy's cut was part of a numbers game. There were too many established LBs on the team, and when it came time to whittle the roster down to 53 players, the Steelers found that there wasn't enough room on the roster.
The Steelers signed Ivy to the practice squad so that he could continue to improve as a player and learn the Steelers' defensive schemes. The Steelers released no statement as to a reason why Ivy was cut.
Ivy previously spent time on the Carolina Panthers practice squad. Ivy has shown in his time with the Panthers and Steelers that he plays very well in the Preseason but can't quite make it to regular season rosters.
